Two families of zongzi

Savoury or sweet? Both, honestly.

The difference starts with the rice. Soy-marinated for savoury, plain white for sweet — and from there the fillings go in very different directions.

A savoury pork and egg yolk zongzi next to a sweet red bean zongzi, both cut open on bamboo leaves

Savoury · soy-marinated rice

The glutinous rice is tossed in soy, rice wine and a little sugar before wrapping, so every grain turns amber and tastes of the braise.

Typical fillings

  • Pork belly
  • Salted egg yolk
  • Meigancai
  • Pork rib
  • Chestnut
  • Shiitake
  • Chinese sausage

How to eat

Eat hot, straight from the steamer. No sauce needed — a little chilli oil if you like heat.

Savoury zongzi

Sweet · white rice

Plain glutinous rice steamed soft and glossy, so the filling does the talking. Gentle, chewy and a little floral from the leaf.

Typical fillings

  • Red bean paste
  • Candied jujube
  • Taro
  • Purple sweet potato
  • Black sesame
  • Lotus seed & osmanthus

How to eat

Warm or at room temperature. Dip in sugar, drizzle with honey or condensed milk, or eat as it comes.

Your family recipe, wrapped by our hands

Grandma used two yolks. Dad wanted extra chestnut. Someone in the house is vegan. Pick the rice, pick the fillings, pick the size, name the recipe — we make it exactly that way.

  • Choose soy-marinated or white rice, then add any fillings you like from 30 — we recommend up to 5.
  • Pick a size: Standard, Large or Extra large — the same recipe, more of it.
  • Custom recipes come in batches of 3, so the kitchen can wrap them properly.
  • Every filling shows its own price before you tap it — most are £0.50; a few premium ones, like dried scallop or abalone, cost more.

Our story

A small kitchen with a very early alarm

ZongZong started because the zongzi we could buy in London were frozen, sad and nothing like the ones from home. So we soaked leaves in a small kitchen near Canary Wharf, wrapped a few dozen for friends, and never really stopped.

Every zongzi is still wrapped by hand, steamed the morning it is delivered, and made with the same fillings we grew up with — including the meigancai rib our Zhejiang grandparents would recognise.

Our own drivers cover London from the kitchen near Canary Wharf — most postcodes inside the M25. Everywhere else in the UK, we post zongzi chilled for next-day arrival. Type your postcode into the checker above for an instant answer.

Three. Standard is our classic, about the size of your palm and 180 to 200 grams. Large (+£2) is noticeably bigger with more filling to match, and Extra large (+£4) is a proper feast — one is a meal on its own. Every zongzi on the menu and in the builder comes in all three.

Yes. We soak the leaves the night before, wrap every zongzi by hand and steam them on the morning of delivery. In London they arrive warm in an insulated box; posted orders travel chilled, never frozen. Keep leftovers in the fridge for up to three days, or freeze them for up to a month.

Yes, anywhere in the UK. They are vacuum-sealed the morning they are steamed, packed with ice packs in an insulated box and sent by Royal Mail Tracked 24 to arrive the next day. There are no preservatives, so refrigerate as soon as the box arrives and eat within 24 hours, or freeze for up to a month. Posting costs £8.95 per box, from 6 zongzi.

Steam them in the leaf for 10 to 15 minutes from the fridge, or 25 to 30 minutes from frozen, until piping hot in the middle. In a hurry, wrap one in damp kitchen paper and microwave for 2 to 3 minutes. Never boil them unwrapped — the rice turns to porridge.

Yes. Write up to 220 characters in any language at checkout and we print it on a card and tuck it into the box. A card is £2.50, or you can swap 100 points for one. Sending a gift? Enter their address and the card goes to them; your order emails still come to you.

Yes. Add gift wrap at checkout for £4.90 and the zongzi arrive in a ZongZong gift box with the card you choose: a classic printed card, a 3D pop-up birthday cake or a 3D pop-up Christmas tree. Write up to 500 characters in any language and we print it inside exactly as you wrote it. No prices go in the box, and your order emails come to you, not to them.

We deliver in batches so that every van run is worth the trip. Days in the next 3 days only open once someone has already booked them — so if a day looks full, pick another, or check back: as soon as a neighbour books it, it opens for everyone. You can reschedule free of charge until 6pm the day before.

Orders start from 6 zongzi in total, and you can mix any flavours and sizes you like. Custom recipes are made in batches of at least 3 per recipe.

We are a small kitchen and every flavour is wrapped as its own batch, with its own bowl of rice and its own fillings, so one of anything is a batch for one. The least we can wrap without waste is 2, so the menu adds 2 at a time. Gift boxes and custom recipes have their own rules: a box already holds its set of six, and custom recipes are made in batches of 3.

Until 11 November each Christmas box comes at an early-bird bundle price: the Feast Box is £65 instead of £72 and the Sweet Gift Box £55 instead of £62, so you save £7 a box. The regular price is simply what is inside: six hand-wrapped zongzi at their menu prices plus the 3D pop-up Christmas card (£8.50). From 12 November the boxes are at their regular price. The price you pay is locked when you order, whichever December day you choose for delivery.

Absolutely — that is our favourite part. Choose soy-marinated or white rice, then add the fillings you like from thirty; we recommend up to 5. The rice is £6 for Standard, £8 for Large or £10 for Extra large, and every filling adds its own price — most are £0.50, premium ones like dried scallop (£1.50) or whole abalone (£3) a little more. Name the recipe and we make it exactly that way.

Every £1 you spend on a paid order with an account earns 1 point, and a friend who orders through your link earns you both 10. From 100 points, add a reward to your basket — a card, a tote, a box of zongzi — and it is delivered with your next order. The points come off when you pay, and come straight back if the order is refunded.

Every product page lists its allergens, and our custom builder flags them as you add fillings. Our kitchen handles nuts, peanuts, sesame, soya, egg, crustaceans and molluscs, so we cannot guarantee any zongzi is free from traces. If you have a severe allergy, please talk to us before ordering.

A prepaid balance on your account. Top up £200 and we add £10 for free, so £210 lands on your card. It never expires, pays for zongzi, delivery and merch with one tap at checkout, still earns points on every £1, and refunds of card-paid orders go straight back onto the card.
